You’re in the Driver’s Seat

YOU MAKE THE DECISIONS THAT ARE RIGHT FOR YOU

Choosing adoption doesn’t mean you are “giving up” your child or relinquishing control, but that you are bravely providing him or her with the life you imagine. Birth moms are actually in control of much of the modern adoption process and have the power to choose from several options.

1. Your Child’s Adoptive Family

Adoptive families are highly vetted by agencies and the state. Birth moms can choose from a number of families. Love sports? Is faith important to you? Choose a family that meets your criteria and shares similar values.

2. Your Child’s Adoption type

Birth moms are the ones who decide the type of adoption:
  • Open: Accounts for 90% of adoptions. You get to maintain a relationship with your child including visitation, photos, and letters.
  • Partially Open: Similar to Open, but done through the adoption agency.
  • Confidential: No direct or indirect contact between you and your child.

3. Your Birth Plan

Adoption agency staff employ special birth mom counselors who are your advocate and walk you through the birthing process, helping you decide how you want things to go, including: interactions with the adoptive family, time with your baby (or not), who gets to visit you at the hospital, and more.
