thankful to be a dad

In light of Thanksgiving week, I thought it would be fun to do a video-roundup of all the awesome Youtube videos that make me thankful to be a dad. From creating special memories to a constant excuse to be goofy, there are countless reasons that one of the things I am most thankful for this Thanksgiving is being a dad.

One of the best parts about being a Dad is chance to get to play again.  Dad’s have a special role in the family as the “cruise director” of the household.  I love the goofy stuff I have got to do with my kids and wife…It is so much fun being a dad! I am thankful to get to be a fun dad.

I am thankful for the moments I have with my kids. As your kids get older…you begin to realize how much time is passing you by.  I have found it is so helpful to do your best to stop yourself, take a deep breath, and rally soak in and savor those dad-kid moments.  In fact, I have started counting down special moments as my kids grow up…the most obvious is counting down how many Christmases, Halloweens, etc. you have left before they grow up. I like to count down the smaller things too. For example, I grew up getting to go camping and canoeing with my uncle. The other day, after missing multiple years where I “just hadn’t got around” to taking my family camping/canoeing, I realized I only have time for maybe three or four trips before my oldest daughter would be an adult and possibly too busy with her own jobs and such. This totally makes me want to be more intentional with the quality time I spend with my girls. You can savor even the littlest memories with them, like over the summer when I bought them cotton candy at a fair, I may get to do that less than 10 times before they are all grown up.

These next 3 videos really drill down the power we fathers have in the words we say.  It is said, “The power of life and death are in the tongue” and it is so true! While we often spend most of our time as dads focused on NOT saying the WRONG things, It is just as important to make sure we say the right things. The words spoken from a father have unbelievable potential to either harm or help our kids. I am thankful (and challenged) to have this opportunity.

I am so thankful to be a protector of my family and I love this video because it reminds me of this important role I have as a dad. While we are not facing crocodiles, I want to be a dad that is on guard, being watchful about the day to day things that may be harming my family, and then knowing how to work to protect them. Our weapons are not physical, they are deeper, protecting their hearts and minds as they grow up in this harsh world.  A true willingness to protect must also be willing to sacrifice.  As in this second video, the work of a family caretaker is the willingness to provide no matter the sacrifice.  This old MetLife commercial is so strong…I want to be like this dad.  A total rock star.  One of the greatest things I am thankful for this year is the ability to help take care of my family.
